ABOUT
Stained glass is a type of decorative glass that features colourful designs, patterns, or images. It is created by assembling pieces of coloured glass held together by strips of lead, copper, or other metal, known as “Cames.” The glass pieces are typically cut and arranged to form intricate designs, and they may be painted or stained to achieve various effects.
TYPES
Traditional Stained Glass: This type of stained glass adheres to the historical and artistic techniques of handcrafted glass pieces, often seen in religious and architectural contexts.
Tiffany Glass: Louis Comfort Tiffany popularized a specific type of stained glass known for its intricate, nature-inspired designs. Tiffany glass is often used in lamps, windows, and art glass pieces.
HOW IT WORKS
The creation of stained glass involves several steps, including designing the pattern, selecting and cutting the glass, applying any necessary paint or stain, and assembling the pieces using came strips. Solder is used to connect the Cames and reinforce the structure.
Once assembled, the stained glass is thoroughly cleaned, and the spaces between the glass pieces may be filled with putty or cement to secure the structure and create a weatherproof seal.
APPLICATION
Religious Buildings: Stained glass windows are common in churches, cathedrals, and mosques, where they often depict religious scenes and symbols.
Homes: Stained glass can be found in residential settings as decorative windows, doors, and room dividers.
Museums & Art Galleries: Stained glass is appreciated as an art form and is often displayed in cultural institutions.
Restaurants & Commercial Spaces: It is used for decorative elements, including light fixtures and art installations.
MAINTENANCE
Routine cleaning and maintenance are necessary to preserve the beauty and longevity of stained glass. Harsh chemicals or abrasive materials should be avoided.
